Body Talk! What Our Bodies are Telling Us as We Age!

Many words in the English language take on multiple meanings and evoke different feelings. Let’s take the word “aging”. When thinking of wine, aging carries positive connotations. The older the bottle, the more special and delicious its contents. Yet when we think of certain fruits, the word aging carries a negative meaning. It conjures images of decaying fruit that has been left too long. See – the same word creates two entirely different experiences.

But what about our physical bodies as we age? Many of us associate getting older with negatives when in truth, it’s EMPOWERING! We’ve had the privilege of having great life experiences and learnings. By focusing on our physical bodies as we age, it becomes easier to accept the changes we feel.

Maintaining overall good health is crucial in preventing issues from arising prematurely. And prevention works best when you start early. Don’t wait until you see negative changes to take action – make the first steps NOW!

Always check with your primary Doctor, but here are some general tips from medical professionals, encouraging us to be intentional with our health and aging.

  1. Physical movement is key! Physical movement is key! Find something you enjoy to keep your blood flowing and your heart pumping. If the gym isn’t your cup of tea, walking is a great way to get your physical activity in as well as other non-traditional activities. Whatever you decide, try to get in 75- 150 minutes per week.
  2. Always be kind to your skin! Fine lines and wrinkles are part of the journey. To minimize, always wear sunscreen, drink plenty of water, and add products rich in collagen to your skincare routine.
  3. Keep an eye on what you eat. Eating healthy foods helps you maintain a healthy weight. Not only will you look and feel better, but your internal health will also benefit. You’ll have a lower risk of disease and other health challenges.
  4. Be kind to yourself! Mental and physical health go hand in hand. The happier you are, the lower your stress levels and the better state your physical body is in. Take time to enjoy the things you LOVE and enjoy your age! Aging is inevitable, but acceptance eases stress and improves your mental and physical wellbeing.
